Polenovo country estate.100 km south of Moscow, 8-9 hours

Polenovo was founded by the famous Russian painter Vassily Polenov(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Polenov) more then 100 years ago. The area of 2125 acres includes the original House Museum, Polenov's Abbey Studio, workshops, Byokhovo St.Trinity Church, all designed by Polenov, as well as a park, a garden, surrounding grasslands, forests and farmlands. There is a holy well above the Oka river with two bath-houses where you can take an ablution in the cold waters of the spring.Or you can go horse riding for 500 rubles(18usd) an hour.

Oka river national park and Polenovo country estate. 2 days trip with overnight stay in Serpukhov

Oka river national park is a huge wooded area of 10000 acres on the left bank of the Oka some 100 km away from Moscow. The national park was founded after the Second World War to protect threatened plants, including rear orchids, birds and animals. Among the latter are beaver, European bison and a few buffalo from North America.The first day we'll visit the Polenovo country estate and the next one we'll get to the Oka river national park to see the bisons.

Trinity monastery of St. Sergius 1.30 hours from Moscow by suburb train or by car. 5-6 hours

This is a famous place - the spiritual centre of Russia considered by some to be the Russian Vatican.It was founded in 1345 by Sergius of Radonezh.The monastery was closed down by the Communists in 1919 but was allowed to open again in 1946. Currently it is a home to over 300 monks.The monastery houses a theological college, a chorister school and an icon painting school. You’ll be taken into another world in the world of Russian Christianity and probably you’ll feel what average Russian people have been feeling for about 700 years while been there.

The Trinity-St.Sergius Lavra

The Trinity-St.Sergius Lavra, situated seventy kilometers north of Moscow in Sergiev Posad, has played an exeptional role in Russian histoty and culture. The monastery was founded by Sergiy of Radonezh in the middle of the 14th century. In 1380, just before the Kulikovo Battle, Prince Dmitri Donskoy came there to recieve the blessing of the Father Superior. During the rule of Ivan the Terrible, in the 16th century, the monastery was turned into an impregnable fortress, which withstood the sixteen months' siege of the Polish and Lithuanian troops in the early 17th century. In the late 17th century young Peter the Great founded shelter twice in the monastery during the Streltsy insurrections.

The unique architectural complex of the monastery was built within six centuries. It contains magnificient relics of different stages in Russian architecture. The Trinity-St.Sergius Lavra is famous all over the world for its artistic uniqueness and its distinctive appearance. Today the monastery, The Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary, and the Sergiev Posad History and Art Museum are housed in the Lavra. The architectural ensemble of the Trinity-St.Sergius Lavra and its magnificient collection of Russian art of the 14th to 19 century is a national treasure of Russian people.

St. Sergius, the founder of the Holy Trinity Lavra, was born of wealthy Rostov boyars on May 3, 1314. On the fortieth day the local priest baptized the child, naming him Bartholomew.Read more


How we can get there?

We’ll take the commuter train( elektrichka ). It leaves from Yaroslavsky Train Station. It makes a few stops on the 1/2-hour journey. When we get off, it's a 10-minute walk through town to the Monastery. Train cars can be crowded on weekend days, especially in summer. Weekdays during off season they're calm and pleasant. Tickets on the train cost less than $10.
